The bass flute is an octave lower and sounds an octave lower than written. Composers can vary the textures within their music to create contrast and drama. It hardly moves, alternating obsessively between a long note and a shorter one right above it. Woodwinds such as clarinets and saxophones are "single reed" instruments that produce sound from a single vibrating reed, usually made of a thin section of bamboo. "Double reed" woodwinds make their sound from two vibrating reed sections placed back-to-back. Loudness is related to the amplitude of the vibration that produces the sound.
